Boaters urged to prioritize safety on Fourth of July weekend

Boaters heading out on the water this Fourth of July weekend are being urged to prioritize safety, according to safety officials. Preparations should include checking for essential gear before leaving the ramp.

Mandatory items include Coast Guard-approved life jackets in good condition for everyone on board, with children 12 and under required to wear a PFD while the vessel is underway. Additionally, vessels 16 feet or longer should carry a throwable device, and all boats must have a fire extinguisher, a sound-producing device, and a valid registration.

Operators are advised to familiarize themselves with waterway conditions, share a float plan with someone ashore, and be prepared for changing weather and water conditions. Swimmers who are not confident should keep their life jackets on at all times.

Recent flooding has elevated water levels and increased current speeds in many areas, creating additional hazards for boaters. Officials warn of submerged debris and unpredictable currents that may not be visible, urging boaters to exercise extra caution and stay alert while on the water.

Officials hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend on the water.
